Trabzon Coastal Road Options Tested in Traffic Simulation

Trabzon Coastal Road Pedestrianisation Project — as part of this project, the effect on vehicle traffic of measures to strengthen pedestrian priority was examined in detail. A baseline model was prepared for five junctions and five pedestrian crossings along the seafront, establishing the delay, queueing and changes in speed occurring at busy times.

Working from the baseline results, the team developed geometric alterations that could be delivered in the short term alongside longer-term options involving more far-reaching changes to circulation. Roundabouts, connector arms, pedestrian crossings and access points to the shore were treated as a single corridor, and the effect of an intervention at one location on neighbouring junctions was built into the model.

The servicing and loading requirements of businesses along the seafront were assessed separately. Access times and route options were identified to reduce conflict between goods vehicles and pedestrian areas, with priority given to keeping public transport moving.

The simulation comparisons are being used to build a delivery programme that strengthens pedestrian safety and access to the shore without pushing traffic uncontrolled into the surrounding streets. The proposals are set out in short and long-term stages, with the aim of a safer, better-quality public space along the Trabzon seafront.
