The Trabzon coastal road is one of the city centre's most important transport corridors and one of its principal public spaces, connecting the centre to the shoreline. The study develops a design that strengthens pedestrian movement along the seafront, makes the shore easier to reach and improves the quality of the public realm, while keeping vehicle circulation, public transport and local business activity running without interruption.
Existing traffic conditions were examined at five junctions and five pedestrian crossings, with delay, queueing, number of stops and average speed assessed in a micro-simulation model. Service vehicles, loading and unloading movements and logistics access routes were considered separately, so that the knock-on effects of pedestrianisation on the surrounding road network could be analysed.
The short-term proposals cover geometric alterations and pedestrian safety measures that can be delivered quickly; the longer-term proposals set out more far-reaching changes to circulation and further gains in public space. Each option was tested against the simulation results, with the aim of striking a balanced, staged and practicable solution between vehicle access and pedestrian priority.
