Project Objectives

The TR82 Region holds considerable freight potential in the industrial plants, organised industrial zones, ports and agricultural production centres of Kastamonu, Çankırı and Sinop, yet these centres have only limited access to the rail network. The study assesses the region's passenger and freight requirements together, and sets out with hard evidence the role rail can play in regional development and the investment this would require.

Existing TCDD lines, road freight movements, port connections and the dispatch patterns of production centres are examined, and the findings of stakeholder meetings held with public bodies, local authorities, industry representatives and logistics operators are brought into the analysis. Alternative demand scenarios are developed using freight types, tonnages, target markets and passenger movements.

Concept route options are compared in terms of connection to the existing network, access to ports and industry, topography, haul distance and potential demand. The study concludes by identifying the rail corridors that could be prioritised, the investment stages involved and the complementary links that would improve the region's competitiveness in logistics.
