Road Safety Study on Bursa's Four Main Entry Corridors

Road Safety Study on Bursa's Four Main Entry Corridors

On the main road corridors carrying traffic into Bursa from the Ankara, Izmir, Mudanya and Istanbul directions, a study of merge and diverge points has been carried out. The work sets out to identify, at corridor scale, the loss of capacity and the safety risks arising at these connections during busy periods.

At each connection, lane continuity, acceleration and deceleration lengths, sight conditions, interaction with nearby junctions and weaving movements were examined. Site observations were combined with traffic data to identify the points causing sudden lane changes, queueing or interruption to the flow on the main road.

For the problem sections, options were developed including redesigning the connections, combining entries and exits, improving acceleration and deceleration lanes and simplifying lane use. The effect of each proposal on the main road was assessed not at a single connection but along successive junctions and connections.

The resulting study allows the interventions to be prioritised by their contribution to safety and capacity. The aim is main road corridors that are easier for drivers to read, more stable in terms of traffic flow and lower in collision risk.
