Project Objectives

The main road corridors running from Bursa towards Ankara, Izmir, Mudanya and Istanbul are the busiest axes in the city, carrying both regional and local traffic. Along these corridors, substandard merge and diverge points, short weaving lengths and irregular connections cause a loss of capacity and give rise to safety problems. The study examines these points as a whole in order to make the flow on the main roads safer and more stable.

For each corridor, the geometry of the connections, lane continuity, speed changes, sight conditions and interaction with nearby junctions were analysed. Using traffic data and site observations, the queues, bottlenecks, weaving movements and risky manoeuvres occurring at busy times were identified, and their effects were assessed not only at the level of the individual connection but on the performance of the corridor as a whole.

The recommendations cover the redesign of merge and diverge lanes, improvements to acceleration and deceleration lengths, the combining or restriction of connections, simplification of lane use, and signing measures where these are needed. The result is a practicable improvement programme that makes better use of capacity, renders driver behaviour more predictable and reduces the risk of collisions.
