Abstract
Intelligent transport systems (ITS) are widely used across the world to address major transport problems such as congestion, safety and air pollution, to improve the efficiency of transport infrastructure and to support its sustainability. An ITS architecture provides the framework within which ITS applications are planned, defined, integrated and made interoperable, so that transport operations become more efficient and new user services can be supported. This study examines the leading reference architectures — ARC-IT, FRAME and the ISO reference architecture — in the light of how ITS architectures have developed internationally, sets out the importance, benefits and components of an ITS architecture, and presents the tools used to develop one. After summarising work on national and regional ITS architectures elsewhere, it reviews the current position in Türkiye and proposes a model for the wider adoption of a national ITS architecture.
