This study analyses current and future traffic demand for the Sarıyer–Kilyos tunnel in order to assess the scheme's effects on travel across the area, make the best use of its capacity and keep the level of service sustainable over the long term. Once open, the tunnel is expected to cut journey times substantially, reduce fuel consumption and emissions, improve accessibility across the area and support the economic and social development of northern Istanbul.
The work involved calibrating existing conditions in a PTV VISUM transport model, forecasting demand to 2050 on the basis of population projections, and testing a range of level-of-service scenarios to establish optimum operating conditions. The result is a technical framework that supports both the business case for the investment and long-term traffic management strategy.
