Planned to run between Mezitli and 3 Ocak, the line responds to a city whose population and travel demand are growing faster than its public transport infrastructure can absorb. It is intended to stop that gap from widening, ease congestion and shorten journey times. By providing a safe, fast, comfortable and low-emission alternative, the scheme improves access within the city, brings the centres of economic and social life within easier reach and raises the quality of urban life.
Full integration with existing and planned public transport services will make the network as a whole more efficient, reduce dependence on the private car and, in turn, lower greenhouse gas emissions. The line has therefore been conceived as a long-term, integrated infrastructure investment supporting Mersin's sustainable transport vision.
