The South Light Rail Transit (LRT) line is planned to meet rising travel demand in central Kocaeli and along the southern Gölcük–Başiskele–İzmit corridor, to ease congestion and to increase the share of trips made by public transport. By offering an affordable, fast, safe and comfortable alternative, the scheme is intended to improve access across the city, keep urban functions working properly and raise quality of life. It addresses the bottlenecks in the current network, strengthens the link between the southern districts and the city centre, and brings growth areas into the wider urban fabric.
Integration with the Akçaray tram line and the planned North and University LRT lines will give the rail network continuity. This will in turn reduce dependence on the private car, keep environmental impacts to a minimum and reinforce sustainable urban transport infrastructure.
