Gaziantep Station, Düztepe and the City Hospital are three major centres that bring together different types of trip in the city centre and generate heavy demand throughout the day. The study sets out to establish a high-capacity, regular and reliable public transport spine between them, making the hospital easier to reach, relieving pressure on the roads in the centre and creating a new corridor that works as part of the existing rail network.
The feasibility work considered population and employment distribution, land use, existing public transport routes and travel demand together. Along the densely built-up sections of the alignment, walking access to stations, interchange opportunities and the relationship with major urban land uses were examined, and the line and station options were tested against the results of the transport model.
The technical viability of each option is addressed through system characteristics, the operating plan, rolling stock and depot requirements, and construction conditions. Capital and operating costs, journey time savings, economic benefits and environmental effects are weighed together in order to reach a rail investment decision that is deliverable and sustainable over the long term.
