Once open, Ali Osman Sönmez State Hospital will generate heavy demand spread across the day, made up of patients, visitors, staff, service vehicles and emergency traffic. The study provides safe and rapid access to the hospital site while protecting the capacity of the surrounding main roads and junctions, avoiding adverse effects on traffic within the neighbourhood and establishing an arrangement that is accessible to every group of users.
The traffic impact assessment analysed existing vehicle and pedestrian movements, the trips the hospital will generate in future, junction capacity, parking requirements and public transport connections together. Circulation scenarios within and around the site were compared with regard to the differing operational needs of the emergency, staff, visitor and service entrances.
The study produced a complementary set of preliminary designs covering junction geometry, new road connections, lane arrangements, the approach to signal control, pedestrian crossings and public transport access. The package is intended to keep emergency vehicles moving without interruption, to keep car park entries and exits working in an orderly way, to give pedestrians safe access and to keep the surrounding road network performing acceptably at peak times.
